THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO FOOD IN WATERVILLE

  • Let us take your taste buds on a journey through the restaurants, cafes, diners and pubs of Waterville, Maine!

    Purple

    Purple Cow House of Pancakes

    $ | 6 US-201, Waterville, ME 04901

    If you want a classic Maine Sunday brunch, Purple Cow is the place to be. With a menu more expansive than one can possibly explain (i.e. prime rib is on the menu next to bacon pancakes), you'll never be unsatisfied after a meal at Purp. With huge portions and very reasonable prices, Purple Cow is a great place to go with friends for a post-crazy night brunch, or with family members when they are visiting you on the Hill.

    Recommendations: Mac and cheese, raspberry chocolate chip pancakes (they are the size of your face), and all of the milkshakes.

    Hours of Operation:
    Monday- Thursday: 5:00am - 8:00pm
    Friday and Saturday: 5:00am - 9:30pm
    Sunday: 6:00am - 8:00pm

    G's

    Big G's Deli

    $ | 581 Benton Ave, Winslow, ME 04901

    The jingle in their commercials is “You get more for your money, when you eat at Big G’s,” and that is some honest advertising. I have yet to see anyone finish a full Big G’s sandwich in one sitting, and it’s easy to see why. Each sandwich is about the size of a small child, but way more delicious. Big G’s is a perfect place to bring your parents if they’re ever worried you’re not being fed enough.

    Recommendation: Gov. King (Turkey, Ham, Bacon, onions, muenster and coleslaw)

    Hours of Operation:
    Monday- Sunday: 6:00 am – 7:00 pm

    Mainely

    Mainely Brews

    $$ | 1 Post Office Square, Waterville, ME 04901

    There’s nothing better than a beer and a burger, and nobody does either better than Mainely’s. Occupying the basement of Waterville’s old post office, this tavern offers a range of pub fare and house-brewed beers, as well as a constant source of entertainment. Mainely’s Trivia Night attracts droves of Colby students (and professors) every Thursday night, while live music or karaoke dominate most other nights. Come here with friends for a mid-week work break or talk shop with a favorite professor. It’s always a great time at Mainely’s!

    Recommendation: The Gouda Burger with Da Blueberry Ale (made with Coastal Maine blueberries).

    Hours of Operation:
    Monday- Sunday: 11:00 am-1 am
    Hours Serving Food: 11:00 am-12:30 am

    Selah Tea

    $ | 177 Main St, Waterville, ME 04901

    Maine does a lot of things right: lobster rolls, Bean Boots, stunning hikes, anything from Duckfat in Portland, etc. However, one thing the state is not known for is its cafes. Selah Tea, however, brings the comfort of urban, artisanal cafes to Waterville’s sleepy Main Street. A favorite study enclave of many Colby students, Selah offers a range of fresh treats. During the winter, cozy up with a kettle of their loose-leaf jasmine tea or decadent vanilla lattes while you chow down on a freshly-baked cinnamon bun. When spring finally arrives, Selah’s Ginger Mint Arnold Palmer and Wicked Good Chicken Salad Sandwich can’t be beat. Now the big question is, why does anyone still study on campus?

    Recommendation: Wicked Good Chicken Salad Sandwich and a Hot London Fog (earl grey tea with steamed milk).

    Hours of Operation:

    Monday-Friday: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm
    Friday-Sunday: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm

    Waterville House of Pizza (WHOP)

    $ | 139 Main St, Waterville, ME 04901

    The Mecca of Midnight Munchies, the Waterville House of Pizza—or WHOP as it’s affectionately known—has been catering to Colby students for years. With a menu that ranges from gyros and hoagies to calzones and buffalo chicken fritters, WHOP delivery is a must after the Spa closes on Saturday nights.

    Recommendation: Steakbomb Sandwich.

    Jorgensen's Cafe

    $$ | 103 Main St, Waterville, ME 04901

    A Main Street classic, Jorgensen's never fails to please. Jorgensen's is known for their variety of coffee choices and healthy but delicious sandwich, salad, and soup options. The interior is brightly painted, the staff is friendly, and there's always something new and yummy to try. It also doesn't hurt that there's a case full of chocolates and ice cream if your sweet tooth is ringing.

    Recommendation: Breakfast sandwich, pesto chicken wrap.

Surrounded by rustic brick and wood walls, this raw bar is soaked in soft light, making it a perfect spot for that first date with your future spouse. While this restaurant focuses on seafood, it excels in all aspects of its menu. Whether you go for a dozen of their fresh oysters or the demi-glazed NY Steak, there’s no wrong order at 18 Below. Mirakuya Sushi and Steakhouse

    $$$ | 150 Kennedy Memorial Dr, Waterville, ME 04901

    Fairly new to Waterville, Mirakuya has made a huge splash and been a crazy success with Colby students and faculty alike. Aside from the food being delicious, Mirakuya offers two seating options: a hibachi table (think Benihana) or a regular table. If you're looking for a fun night out with friends or family or a great place to celebrate a birthday, the hibachi table is the way to go. It's fun, the table is big enough for at least 12, and the portions are ginormous. Definitely check out Mirakuya, and if you can't find a way to get there, they deliver!

    $$ | 400 Kennedy Memorial Dr, Waterville, ME 04901

The menu contains all of the classic Thai food favorites, including multiple different types of Pad Thai (crispy, dumpling, and original, oh my!). One of the best things about Pad Thai Too, though, is that their menu is filled with twists on the classics. So, whether you're in the mood for your old-school favorites or if you want to try something new, check out Pad Thai Too!

    Riverside Farm Restaurant and Wine Market

    $$$ | 291 Fairfield Street, Oakland, ME 04963

    At the beginning of the 20th century, much of Maine was still devoted to farmland. While the trees have reclaimed most of the state, Riverside Farm Market provides a brief glimpse into Central Maine’s agricultural past. Situated on the picturesque Messalonskee Stream, Riverside grows much of its produce onsite, guaranteeing you the freshest ingredients possible. While a dinner here will put a sizable dent in your wallet, their brunch is a more feasible alternative, offering everything from bagels with lox to Moroccan-style poached eggs. A perfect spot for parent’s weekend or a Sunday morning with friends.

    Recommendation: Anything with fiddleheads, Spanikopita.

    What’s the best way to cool off after moving in to your dorm room? Take a trip down the hill to grab some ice cream at Dairy Cone, a true Waterville institution. Because the shop closes down from Mid-September to April, Colby students only have a small window of time to get a cup of the best ice cream in Maine!

    $$ | 4 Chaplin St, Waterville, ME 04901

    Nestled in with an indie movie theater and a cozy brick-oven pizzeria, Buen Apetito is a great place to go when you're craving classic Mexican food. The endless baskets of chips and salsa brought to your table starting from the second you sit down is one of the best parts of the meal, and if youre 21+, the margaritas rival some of the best you'll find around Waterville. Buen Apetito just renovated their space, as well, so you don't have to worry about waiting for a long time to get some delicious Mexican food!

From specialty pizzas to vegetarian pizzas to make-your-own pizza, there's something for everyone at Grand Central.
