Pen to Paper: “Human Nature”

Grass grows from scalps

limbs coarse with bark

my smile cracks as the

dry soil of my cheeks breaks

into pieces, falling to the floor

of flesh lined with peach fuzz

                      —

and the Earth’s sweat

we shower in the air’s tears

after swimming in rivers of blood

kayaking the arteries

of the ground’s skeleton

in hopes to cleanse ourselves

                      —

of these red stains

but we blossom with moisture

walk with razor-edged toes

of branches upon a land that

moans and complains

as we puncture its skin

                      —

a terrain that rises and

falls with each [        ] breath

our grass hair falls

and lightens to ochre

our lips rough and barren

with cracks as the rivers cease

                      —

to flow and our soil fills the Earth’s

bodily crevices
