Golf looks ahead to success next season

The Colby golf team completed their final two weeks of the season with a ninth place finish at the NESCAC Fall Qualifier and a third place finish at the Colby Classic. In these final tournaments, the Mules showcased their depth with top finishes from two different teammates. Geoff Sullivan ’17 led the team with a 79 on the first day of the NESCAC Fall Qualifier. The Topsfield, Mass. native then shot an 87 on the second day, and finished tied for 29th among individual golfers. Nick O’Connor ’19 of Canton, Massachusetts also shot notably consistent scores of 87 and 88 on the weekend, which placed him 41st in the group. The team was happy to finish ahead of NESCAC rival Bowdoin College by six strokes.
The Mules further displayed the impressive depth of their roster with a strong round from two upperclassmen at the Colby Classic on October 11. The pair of EJ Rauseo ’17 from Methuen, Massachusetts, and Chris Gallogly ’16, a senior captain from East Greenwich, Rhode Island, led the Mules to a third place finish on a serene fall day at the Waterville Country Club. The tournament also consisted of selected pairs from Bates College, Thomas College, and University of Maine at Presque Isle. But, the final rounds of the season don’t reflect the bright future for Colby golf.
“We will have a lot of time to work on our swings this offseason,” said sophomore Charlie Ruhl ’18 of Barrington, Rhode Island. “We’re planning on adding some matches in the spring, which we have never done in the past. It should really help us improve and become ready for next fall.”
He also alluded to the development of the team as a whole, and how the golfers appreciated each other more as the season progressed. “That’s what it’s all about,” Ruhl added. “Building relationships with those who share the same love for the sport.”
The team will lose three seniors this offseason, which is an even 25 percent of their roster. They look forward to welcoming new recruits, and to building consistency in their emerging, young talent in the coming months.
