First-year shines at ITA

Colby tennis made the trek to Middlebury this weekend for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.  Three Mules represented Colby on the court.  Scott Altmeyer ’20 played singles while  Sumukh Pathi ’21 played singles as well as doubles with Shaw Speer ’18.  Altmeyer started his day with a win in his first match against Babson before falling later to Bowdoin. In doubles, Pathi and Speer had poor luck with the draw and were paired against Taylor and Grodecki of Williams College.  Taylor and Grodecki were a pair last year and made it to the semi-finals of the NCAA Doubles National Championship.  Pathi and Spencer fell 8-2 for the match.  Pathi, though, found great success in singles.  As a first-year, this was his inaugural tournament and he now holds a 2-1 singles record.  Though he fell to Barr of Williams College, Pathi took down an All-American and the eighth-seeded player to make round 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championships.  Following the match, Head coach Jason Cohen said “Sumukh played some great tennis and was able to be tough at the right times in his second match to take out a seeded player. It’s a truly amazing start to his college career.”  The Colby tennis team is poised for a great season this Fall.
