Cross Country race in NESCAC finals

On a rainy and less-than-ideal Saturday afternoon, Colby College hosted the NESCAC Cross Country Championships. The Quarry Road trails were saturated with water, which made conditions difficult for the highly anticipated meet. The Mules came into the meet with high expectations after coming off an impressive win at the Maine state championship one week prior, and the course was packed with enthusiastic fans.  The gun sounded at noon and David Chelimo ’17 immediately  jumped out in front of the pack along with two other Tufts runners. This small group was able to maintain and extend their lead throughout the race with Chelimo finishing an impressive third in a time of 25:22.94. Griffon Gagnon ’17 also had a great race for Colby and pulled off a 13th place finish with a time of 26:22.53. Bernard Kibet ’18, Nathan Madeira ’17, and Noel Feeney ’18 rounded out the top five for Mules finishing with times of 26:57.08, 27:04.35, and 27:09.73 respectively. Although the team had high hopes for a possibly victory at the meet, they had to settle for a fifth place finish. Other Colby runners included: Eli Decker ’20, Tom O’Shea ’17, Reeve Maddux ’19, Silas Eastman ’17, Thomas O’Donnell ’17, Aziz Ghadiali ’20, and Gabe Kline ’19 who all competed hard in front of the home crowd.

Fans gathered themselves after the exciting men’s race for the start of the women’s championship. Caitlin Lawlor ’18 finished 12th place overall for the Mules with a time of 23:20.06. Plagued by injuries this season, Colby women’s settled for a ninth place finish. Hannah Springhorn ’19 finished in 26th with a time of 23:51.49 followed by Mahal Alvarez-Backus ’19 who finished with a time of 25:20.43. Captain Katie Metayer ’17 spoke about the team’s performance on Saturday, “It was a really awesome opportunity to host the NESCAC championships at home down the hill at Quarry Road,” she said. “We’ve been training on the trails all season and it was incredible to see everything come together and finally have a larger championship there with all of the other NESCAC schools on Saturday. We had a lot of cross country/track alumni and current Colby students come out to support us, including the nordic ski team who are always our biggest fans and also race at Quarry Road during their winter season.”

Brit Biddle ’19 and Amy LoTemplio ’19 completed  in the top five finishers for the Mules with times of 25:26.08 and 25:29.88 respectively. Sonia Tremblay ’20, Helen Chavey ’19, MJ Kievman ’20, Lydia Fanning ’20, Margo Buys ’19 and Taylor Kennedy ’18 also braved the rain and fought hard for the Mules on Saturday.
